Reading
Reading is at the heart of our school curriculum, with each year group studying a different class novel every big term. We have recently been awarded the Lincolnshire Reading Pledge Bronze Award which we are very proud of.
The teaching of early reading is vital, and here at Heighington Millfield we follow the Little Wandle scheme for phonics. More information on the approach and how you can support your children at home can be found on the link below;

As the children progress through the school, they are taught essential comprehension skills using Bug Club comprehension.
Here at Heighington Millfield Primary Academy, we are continuing to develop further a love of reading amongst all of our pupils. We have many events and areas of work taking place in school to encourage the children to read for pleasure, however recognise that this will always be more successful if the children are encouraged to do this at home too.
To support your child in the development of reading, we recommend that they spend time reading and exploring their colour banded book as well as their chosen reading for pleasure text. This can be a mixture of you listening to them independently read their school book, your child listening to you reading them a story for pleasure or even a combination of the two.
Furthering a love of reading could also be supported through:
- Sharing a bedtime story
- Joining a local library
- Making books a familiar and frequent part of family life
- Modelling reading for pleasure
- Asking lots of questions
Reading Ambassadors
We are lucky enough to have a team of reading ambassadors in school who work fantastically as a group from Years 3-6 to share their passion for reading with the rest of the school. They meet regularly with Miss Done to plan ways in which we can support the love of reading across the whole school and develop ways in which we can promote reading for pleasure amongst all of our children.
Their plans for this year are to:
- Organise the school library and ensure it is fully stocked and replenished with new authors and books
- Recommend a termly author to the rest of the school and share this using library display
- Share recommended reads and authors in whole school assembly
- Develop class reading corners to ensure consistent approach differentiated by year group
- Support in the organising and delivery of whole school reading for pleasure events such as World Book Day and World Poetry Day
